M80: Marco Ferrari's new explorer yacht concept
Eco-hybrid technology and an aluminum hull for sailing from the tropics to the ice.

Designer Marco Ferrari has unveiled the concept for an 80-meter explorer yacht, characterized by modern aesthetics and environmentally sustainable engineering. The hull, constructed entirely of aluminum to combine maximum lightness with high hydrodynamic efficiency, features flowing exterior lines and a low profile. With a gross tonnage of 2250 GT and a draft of just 3,75 meters, it is ideal for both long ocean voyages and the exploration of coastal areas and shallow waters. Its range also extends to the polar regions thanks to its Ice Class 1D certification.
Inside, the spaces are designed to offer complete visual and functional continuity. The yacht can accommodate up to 14 passengers in seven luxury cabins, while a crew of 22 plus the captain manages the services and navigation. The owner has a full-beam private apartment in a private area, including a study, library, walk-in closet, bathroom, and an outdoor balcony for exclusive use.
In the concept, the main salon and dining area form a single, spacious space, enhanced by extensive, floor-to-ceiling black windows. This design solution allows for extraordinary natural light and a vast, uninterrupted view of the interior and the surrounding landscape. Sliding glass doors seamlessly connect the covered areas to the open decks, maximizing onboard livability.
The M80's outdoor areas offer a variety of ways to relax in close contact with the water. The aft deck features an infinity pool overlooking the sea, while the bow section features a hot tub surrounded by large sun loungers. The same forward area also features a touch-and-go helicopter landing pad, useful for rapid logistical transfers. Among the most distinctive technological features is the Nemo Lounge, a submerged space offering a direct view below the waterline.
The marine activities package includes two 11-meter electric-powered tenders with onboard rapid charging stations, three jet skis, an aerial drone and a tethered underwater vehicle for deep-sea exploration.
The M80 explorer yacht adopts a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system that operates in synergy with two counter-rotating Azipod azimuth thrusters. The absence of traditional rudders and shafts optimizes maneuverability, supported by two bow thrusters and a dynamic positioning system. For stabilization, the yacht relies on extendable fins that are active both underway and at anchor. Energy management is based on an integrated architecture with photovoltaic glass elements to support auxiliary loads, high-performance insulating glass, and advanced HVAC systems with waste heat recovery for heating and air conditioning.
Flexible propulsion allows for three different operating modes. In Eco-Hybrid mode, the internal combustion engines operate at the optimal rpm to power the generators, while the electric motors provide thrust, reducing fuel consumption by an estimated 25% to 30%. For maximum performance, Boost mode combines the diesel and electric motors to deliver maximum thrust and propel the vessel up to its top speed of 26 knots. Compatibility with HVO biofuels also reduces overall emissions by up to 90% compared to standard fossil fuels.
Finally, Silent Mode, also known as Zero Mode, ensures fully electric navigation for up to eight hours at a reduced speed of 7-8 knots. This configuration eliminates direct emissions and mechanical vibrations, greatly enhancing acoustic comfort at night or allowing access to marine reserves and protected areas. With a range exceeding 5.500 nautical miles, Marco Ferrari's design meets both the needs of long ocean crossings and the dynamics of large-scale coastal cruising.
