Kanguro is born, a life jacket dedicated to mothers with newborns.
Designed by Veleria San Giorgio with Ánako Aps, the device keeps the newborn in a protected position during floating in emergency situations.

It's called Kanguro and it's the first life jacket for mothers with newborns developed by Veleria San Giorgio in collaboration with the non-profit association Ánako Aps as part of the project + Near from afar. Kanguro received the 2026 ADI Compasso d'Oro, the award that since its inception in 1954 has been the most prestigious global design recognition. It is designed to allow the mother to keep her newborn in a high, stable, and protected position while floating, increasing safety in emergency situations. Conceived to combine safety and humanity, it is the result of a process that, after an initial co-design phase conducted by university students and professors, included the development phase by Ánako Aps, a social design laboratory, and Veleria San Giorgio, which helped transform the idea into a concrete device.
“The 2026 ADI Compasso d'Oro awarded to the project by + Vicino da lontano,” comments Anton Francesco Albertoni, CEO of Veleria San Giorgio and past president of Confindustria Nautica, “represents for Veleria San Giorgio recognition of the technical expertise and experience gained over a century of work in contact with the sea, which we now pour into Kanguro: a project with a strong humanitarian purpose, helping to transform social design into a concrete, achievable response oriented towards the protection of life.”
The ADI Compasso d'Oro Award awarded to the social design project + Vicino da lontano recognizes research that, together with Veleria San Giorgio, universities, students, and designers, worked to address an often-ignored problem: the lack of adequate life jackets for mothers with newborns during sea crossings.
