The project for a new marina at the port of Gela is taking shape.

The first official step has been taken in the port of Gela towards the construction of a marina with related services for recreational boating.

The promoter is the Marina di Gela Consortium, which has filed an application with the Western Sicilian Sea Port Authority for a 50-year maritime concession for an area of ​​approximately 137 square meters, approximately 80 of which is water. The consortium, led by engineer Maurizio Damante, specifically envisions the construction of "a maritime infrastructure dedicated to recreational boating" at the port, consisting, it explains, "of facilities for mooring vessels, commercial buildings, a clubhouse, a control tower, marina offices, and an area for a shipyard."

Specifically, the project envisions the creation of 490 berths, with stalls ranging from category 0 to VI. Specifically, 72 berths are currently planned for 8-meter berths, 110 for 10-meter berths, 132 for 12-meter berths, 104 for 15-meter berths, 24 for 18-meter berths, 25 for 22-meter berths, and 23 stalls for 30-meter berths.

Few other details are known to date about the project (the document, submitted to the authority in July 2025 and subsequently supplemented, was published on May 9, but the documentation is not available online), which, as mentioned, is being put forward by a consortium in which nine companies currently participate.

These include Lorefice & Ponzio Srl (specializing in remediation, lifting, transport, and land and sea clean-up), Di Marca Service Srl (fire safety and workplace safety training), Icaro Ecology Spa (specializing in industrial and civil construction, environmental activities), Cm Impianti Srl (construction and assembly of pipes and metal structures, also active in naval refitting), CoVeca Srl (waste management), Gradito Oleodinamica Srl (lifting and transport), Ergo Meccanica Srl (engineering, construction, assembly, and maintenance of industrial plants), Courier Pack Srl, and Dam Srl.

Any competing applications to the one submitted by the Marina di Gela Consortium, as well as observations or objections, may be submitted by the beginning of July.

The possibility of building a marina in the port of Gela had already been discussed in 2021, when an agreement was signed between the municipal administration and Sicindustria, a local association of the Sicilian Confindustria system.
To date, the port, which has long suffered from silting up of the seabed, making access impossible for vessels, has progressively limited commercial activity. Annalisa Tardino, president of the Port Authority for the Western Sicilian Sea, has provided some reassurances on this point in recent weeks. In response to requests from the Municipality of Gela, she noted that the port's historical criticalities (which came under the authority's management only in 2022) were inherited after formal handover from the Region. Since then, Tardino maintained, the authority has begun planning the necessary interventions to restore the port to operational conditions, signing a new implementing agreement with the Municipality for the restoration and expansion of the port, and having therefore completed the related preliminary activities under its responsibility.
