Cesari (Quick Group) “We will develop solutions for yachts up to 80 meters”

According to Lorenzo Cesari, Quick Group's sales manager for the Superyacht Division, the current commercial size of pleasure vessels is 50-52 meters, with the prospect of increasing to 60 meters soon. Among the new products are the Olympic anchors from Quick Nautical Equipment and the Riviera range of anchoring and mooring equipment from the Sanguineti brand.

How have you responded to the increase in superyacht displacement?

The group responded three years ago with the XR9, a windlass for 26 mm chain with a crossbeam, and the TB9 capstan. Previously, with the XR8, we limited ourselves to 22 mm chain with a crossbeam. We're growing in parallel with the commercial size of superyachts, which now stands at 50 meters. Sanguineti, on the other hand, already covered the sector with chains up to 26 mm with a crossbeam: we've restyled the range while maintaining the same specifications to supply superyachts up to 55 meters, which in 3-4 years will become 60 meters. This is why we're developing windlasses for pleasure boats up to 80 meters.

How is the offering evolving to meet the needs of superyacht anchoring and capstan systems? 

"Our market segment extends up to 60-meter pleasure and professional vessels, meaning we cater to all windlasses with chains up to 26 mm with crossbeams. We've revitalized the Riviera range of Sanguineti windlasses and capstans, a significant innovation: it's a historic line and a benchmark for shipyards, owners, and captains. We also offer a new line of retractable capstans, available with AISI 316 stainless steel drums or anodized aluminum with various finishes."

On the Quick front, what are the most important new features?

"The most important are the Olympic stainless steel anchors, SHHP (Super High Holding Power) certified: they have the same anchoring power as non-certified anchors at half the weight. Our range reaches up to 160 kg and is perfect for fast boats, both recreational and military, thanks also to their great lateral stability when anchored."

What class of yacht is a 160kg anchor suitable for?

"I'd say pleasure boats up to 45-50 meters. Beyond 90-100 feet, many pleasure boats adopt twin windlasses, so weight must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, along with displacement, equipment number, and hull shape."

Are these solutions transversal between sail and motor?

"Yes, for example, retractable capstans, which were once thought to be typical for sailboats over 55 feet, are now highly sought after for motor yachts as well. Designers are creating increasingly clean, flush sterns, and retractable capstans are a perfect fit: today, we supply them more to the motor yacht world than to the sailing world. We've also developed hydraulic retractable bollards, consistent with the same aesthetic and functional philosophy."

Is the anchor winch a product that still has room for evolution?

On deck, the hardware remains conceptually the same: axle, shaft, gypsy, and drum. Innovation is below deck. In the superyacht sector, three-phase, double-winding asynchronous motors were previously used to allow two speeds for raising and lowering the chain. For ten years, we've been using asynchronous motors equipped with inverters and integrated into a CAN network to manage chain raising and lowering precisely to the centimeter. The inverter, or more technically a VFD (variable frequency drive), modulates the speed of the gearmotor. As chain counter manufacturers, we integrate them into the same CAN network, simplifying wiring and onboard logic.

How much do certifications matter?

"Very much. This year we will be supplying windlasses and capstans certified by Lloyd's Register, RINA, ABS, and Bureau Veritas. Type approvals impose strict technical specifications, so creative leeway is limited."

What are your main strengths?

"The completeness of our range, both in terms of deck equipment and their possible accessories. We have many solutions, including for chain cleats, which are the most important deck component in terms of safety because they are relied upon to secure the ship to the chain and anchor during anchoring. Furthermore, we produce all components in our Italian machine shops, without using cast parts but only with parts machined from solid pieces using CNC machines, from bar stock or sheet metal. This is a choice that has always set us apart. Sanguineti has 65 years of history, and for many captains it is still "the anchor winch," and it is often the captains, owner's representatives, and shipowners who insist on this legendary brand."
