First hydrogen refueling at the Baglietto shipyard in La Spezia
Operation carried out by Bluenergy Revolution, at the construction site and under the direction of the Spezia Port Authority

The first test for hydrogen refueling from a dockside mobile vehicle to a vessel was carried out recently in La Spezia, by Bluenergy Revolution, at the Baglietto shipyard.
The activity was authorized by the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port Authority, by the Director of the Energy and Environment Department, Engineer Mirko Leonardi, following the favorable opinion of the conference of services.
During the bunkering operation, all indicated requirements were met and the refueling procedure presented by Bluenergy Revolution during the services conference was followed. The activity consisted of several phases: from the preparation of the vehicles and the work area to the safety meeting with all operators; from the preparation activities for the hydrogen transfer to the hydrogen transfer activity; from the closure of the hydrogen transfer to the final clearing of the area.
“The operation went as expected, demonstrating the feasibility of safely carrying out hydrogen transfers at low pressures (30 bar) thanks to the use of onboard storage systems based on metal hydride technology, the same technology used by the Italian Navy's U212 submarines, which has been carrying out refueling operations at the Arsenal in the port of La Spezia for decades, the same technology implemented in Baglietto's experimental BZero plant and planned for integration on board yachts,” explained a note from the Port Authority: “Metal hydride technology allows the use of low-pressure hydrogen sources and does not require advanced temperature or flow controls, as the absorption of hydrogen is automatically regulated by the pressure and temperature of the hydrides themselves, therefore, the refueling is intrinsically safe.”
