After a 28-year wait, approximately 3.000 new berths are planned for the Lazio nautical industry.
The regional council has approved the new port plan: a historic moment for coastal planning and the region's "Blue Economy."

After 28 years of waiting, Lazio is preparing for a revolution in the nautical sector thanks to the recent approval of the new plan for ports of regional economic interest by the Regional Council.
The plan, which aims to address the chronic shortage of berths and boost tourism and the local economy, focuses on the construction of seven new tourist marinas along the Lazio coastline. Each port will have an estimated capacity of between 300 and 500 vessels, for a total of approximately 3.000 new berths. The locations identified for these new facilities are: Montalto di Castro, Tarquinia, Ladispoli, Latina, Terracina, Formia, and Ponza.
This infrastructural development is the result of a long and complex administrative process and aims to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability, an increasingly important aspect for enhancing the coastal natural heritage.
The plan's approval has sparked great satisfaction among regional political forces, who have called it a "fundamental tool for sustainable development" and a "concrete response" to the demand for berths. They believe that the new berths represent not just a milestone, but the starting point for a development model that must remain flexible, with ongoing collaboration with municipalities to explore further growth opportunities.
Particular focus was placed on the Latina area, where the Foce Verde port project was relaunched. The Region and the Municipality of Latina had already included this idea among strategic projects in 2007, and the landing stage was formally included in the Regional Port Plan in 2016. The area, currently described as "degraded and lacking significant natural features," could be transformed into a modern and sustainable nautical hub. A port in this area, it was argued, would not only improve navigation safety but also bring economic and tourism benefits, without compromising the dune ecosystem. The debate on the future of the Latina coastline will be explored in depth at meetings involving institutions and citizens.
