Feadship joins Nemo to explore the future of nuclear yachting
The Dutch shipyard joins the international network working on regulations and safety for nuclear power at sea. This is a forward-looking step, with potential implications for next-generation yachts as well.

Feadship has announced its membership in the Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization (NEMO), an international group bringing together shipyards, institutions, and industry stakeholders with the goal of developing shared guidelines for the safe use of nuclear power in the maritime sector. This move confirms the Dutch shipyard's long-standing commitment to developing long-term solutions for the energy transition.
In 2020, Feadship outlined its energy transition roadmap, outlining a series of possible scenarios for reducing the environmental impact of yachts. In recent years, it has already introduced multi-fuel and fuel cell systems, demonstrating the ability to apply complex technologies in real-world settings. Today, the focus is shifting to even more distant frontiers, with an eye on fourth-generation nuclear technologies, which could find application in both zero-emission propulsion and floating platforms for the production of synthetic fuels.
Nuclear power, however, remains a sensitive area. Feadship has studied it from a technical and economic perspective, evaluating its costs, benefits, and operational limitations. The main obstacles are not so much technological feasibility as the lack of a clear regulatory framework. Complex issues such as radiation thresholds, navigation in environmentally sensitive areas, and access to ports located in densely populated urban areas remain.
By joining Nemo, Feadship has chosen not to simply observe, but to actively participate in shaping future rules. The goal is to contribute to a transparent international debate, providing expertise and research capabilities.
"Yachting has always anticipated the future of technology at sea. Joining Nemo," said Giedo Loeff, Head of Innovation and Strategy at Feadship, "is consistent with our vision: to explore all credible solutions for a sustainable future. Nuclear power may not be the answer of tomorrow, but it deserves to be explored responsibly."
Founded in 1849, Feadship is now a global leader in custom superyacht construction. Its operations range from design and construction to refit and resale. With this new addition, it is poised to set the standards that will guide the nautical industry of the future.
