Yanmar launches new SCR catalyst
The new emissions abatement system is designed for commercial and leisure vessels over 24 metres operating in emissions-controlled areas.

Yanmar Marine International has introduced its new Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, designed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from marine diesel engines in Emission Control Areas (ECA). The device, available for use with Yanmar 6LY400-440 series engines, can reduce NOx emissions by 60 to 90 percent, depending on load and temperature conditions.
Yanmar's SCR system meets IMO Tier III requirements, currently mandatory for commercial vessels over 130 kW operating in the ECA. What's more, it can also be installed on pleasure boats over 24 meters long that wish to reduce their environmental impact. A concrete example of this is a J Class recently equipped with this system.
From a technical standpoint, Yanmar's SCR catalytic converter stands out for its compact size and weight. It weighs just 86 kg, significantly less than competing systems, making it easy to retrofit even existing units without major structural modifications. Its operation relies on a series of sensors that detect temperature and NOx levels before entering the catalytic converter. An electronic control unit (ECU) calculates in real time the exact amount of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), also known as AdBlue, to inject into the system. The DEF reacts with the NOx, converting it into nitrogen and water vapor, reducing emissions to near-zero levels.
For colder areas, such as the Nordic and Baltic Seas, Yanmar offers an optional heating kit for the Def, useful for keeping it fluid even below -13°C and avoiding crystallizations that would compromise its effectiveness.
“With this SCR, we have developed a simple and practical solution to significantly reduce NOx emissions,” said Bas Eerden, Sales Director at Yanmar Marine International. “Our goal is not only to comply with regulations, but to make a concrete contribution to a cleaner future for boating.”
Yanmar's new SCR combines with the common rail technology of the 400 to 440 hp 6LY engines, offering a compact, efficient and easily installable system, suitable for merchant ships, motor yachts and sailing yachts operating in emissions control zones.
