After Bezos's wedding, Venice Port Community wants megayachts.
President Calderan appeals for the sector to return to the levels of the early 2000s when up to 230 pleasure boats arrived in the lagoon each year

Now that the spotlight is on Jeff Bezos' arrival in Venice they have died out and that his stay in the lagoon has brought to light a type of market that in Venice could have interesting developments, Venice Port Community wants the lagoon to become a hub for megayachts.
"After the downsizing of large ships, the port has suffered a clear backlash, but, with investments and great capacity on the part of the professionals present, We're struggling to maintain a presence in this market sector. The arrival of the magnate has brought with it a new business opportunity, namely that of megayachts. It's a market worth exploring and taking seriously, as it can foster significant revenue streams. Consider storage, repairs, and supplies, to name just a few. In recent years, we've settled on around 150-160 yachts per year, while in the early 2000s, we reached as many as 230," explains Davide Calderan, president of Venice Port Community.
The president then adds: "We've seen that there's space in the city, and they don't disturb, because they're certainly not crowds that bother residents; on the contrary, they move discreetly and contribute to generating wealth in the city. For example, the Carinthia VII was docked in Santa Marta for years; it certainly can't be said that the shipowner has disturbed the city. So, let's take this as a starting point to try to enhance this sector, perhaps by finding suitable spaces that are easily accessible from the mainland, so that local workers can be made available to these businesses. It's a developed market in Croatia, but we believe the attraction of Venice could be a major driving force. Consider those who work in the plant, textiles, maintenance, but also in supplies, both fuel and food, not to mention services, taxis, catering, hotels, and restaurants. These are luxury niches that aren't heard from in the city, but which generate wealth."
Large pleasure ships are no substitute for the ambitions of returning to growth in cruise traffic and in the merchant shipping sector in general.Subtracto All port projects will be halted, along with canal maintenance, including dredging to restore the planned seabed level, and the construction of new docks. This additional activity could guarantee access to some luxury and smaller ships, allowing to guarantee new jobs and better use of port areas" specifies the president.
Qthis is finally the appeal of Calderan: "To all political and legal forces in the region, from the Veneto Region to the newly formed Lagoon Authority, as well as the Prefecture and Police Headquarters, I ask why we don't initiate a discussion to support these activities, so we can fully understand the opportunities this market offers and how to sustain it. This is where the real alternative to the monoculture of mass tourism begins, seeking alternative options that enhance Venetian artisanal know-how."
