Bayesian

The recovery operations for the wreck of the Bayesian, the sailing yacht, are about to begin sunk over 8 months ago, on August 19, 2024, in the harbour of Porticello; the Palermo Coast Guard has officially communicated that they will begin in early May.

The Maritime Authority also informs that the on-site work will be carried out by companies appointed by the salvager and that the operations will have an estimated duration of approximately 20-25 days.

To ensure the safety of preliminary operations, the Coast Guard confirmed in its statement, the Bayesian's mast will be cut before raising it approximately 50 meters from the seabed. Once both the hull and mast are raised to the surface, they will be made available to the Judicial Authorities in designated areas identified in consultation with the Western Sicily Port Authority.

The operations of lifting the wreck they will be conducted by a special floating crane Equipped for handling heavy loads. The first work vehicles are expected to arrive in the operations area on May 3rd.

To ensure environmental safety throughout the operations, the executing companies will ensure that vehicles equipped with anti-pollution capabilities and equipment are ready to be deployed in an emergency situation. This will include a drone equipped with sensors to detect traces of pollution, as well as a ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle), a remotely controlled underwater vehicle.

The recovery operations will be carried out under the constant supervision of Palermo Port Authority personnel and the surveillance of Coast Guard vessels. The Italian police (Guardia di Finanza and Carabinieri) will help ensure compliance with the area closure order issued by the Porticello Coast Guard. This order prohibits all maritime activities (navigation, anchoring, etc.) within a radius of 650 meters from the site of the shipwreck, necessary to ensure the safe conduct of the complex recovery operations.

Environmental monitoring will be carried out throughout the operation by personnel from the Coast Guard's diving units, who, in collaboration with personnel from ARPA (Regional Agency for Environmental Protection), will also conduct periodic sampling of the surrounding waters.

In order to ensure the safety of the drone used for environmental monitoring, ENAC (Italian National Civil Aviation Authority), at the request of the Coast Guard, ordered a flight ban in the airspace within a radius of 1 nautical mile from the site of the shipwreck.

"The Palermo Coast Guard recommends compliance with the restrictions in order to allow the complex and delicate work to be carried out in complete safety," the statement concludes.
