Technical launch for sailor Luca Rosetti's Class40 Maccaferri Futura

Built by the Genoese shipyard Sangiorgio Marine, the new Musa40 racing yacht is a project by Gianluca Guelfi and Fabio D'Angeli and uses fiberglass, epoxy resin and some non-structural elements in linen and thermoplastic resins to be recyclable.

The Class 40 Maccaferri Futura, the new monohull designed by ocean sailor Luca Rosetti and built in collaboration with Officine Maccaferri, a platform company of Ambienta SGR SpA specializing in civil and environmental engineering, has been launched. The technical launch took place on the docks of Calata Gadda in Genoa, in front of the Sangiorgio Marine shipyard where she was built. Her racing debut is scheduled for May 19th, when Luca Rosetti will set sail from Saint-Tropez for the Paprec 600. Designed by Gianluca Guelfi and Fabio D'Angeli, the Musa40 Maccaferri Futura is a 12-meter vessel designed to compete in ocean races in one of the most recognized classes in the international offshore sailing scene.

"The launch of the Maccaferri Futura is a moment of great emotion and pride for me. It is the fruit of months of passionate work by an exceptional team who, together with Officine Maccaferri, believed in this ambitious project from day one. It is a balanced, fast boat, designed to perform at its best in all conditions," commented Luca Rosetti.

Maccaferri Futura is a Musa 2.0, an evolution of the first Musa built in 2022 by the Genoa-based shipyard. The new monohull, the sixth in the series, incorporates significant improvements and introduces a revised centerboard and centerline distribution, designed to optimize balance and ensure high performance in all sea and wind conditions. This new setup allows for greater balance between upwind and downwind sailing, making the boat even more versatile and competitive even in strong winds. Particular attention was also paid to the keel's maneuverability and the boat's ability to navigate under autopilot, a now essential aspect in modern ocean racing.

"With Futura, Sangiorgio Marine launches its sixth Musa40: a vessel that demonstrates our team's remarkable construction expertise. This winning design is now available in an Evolution version with a keel moved aft and a forward-mounted mast for even more powerful performance. We believe in Luca and are delighted to once again bring the ocean-going dream of an Italian skipper to life," said Edo Bianchi, CEO of Sangiorgio Marine.

“With Maccaferri Futura, we're setting ourselves a goal that goes beyond the individual boat: we want to push the Class 40 to consider a regulation evolution that incentivizes research and the use of sustainable materials,” added Rosetti.

Sustainability and innovation are the cornerstones of Maccaferri Futura, which stands out not only for its sporting performance but also for its advanced research into the materials used. The monohull, constructed primarily of fiberglass and epoxy resin, incorporates components made from innovative, eco-sustainable materials. Some non-structural elements were developed by Nlcomp (Northern Light Composites), a company at the forefront of research into sustainable solutions for the recyclability of composite materials. Harken supplied a range of deck hardware, from winches to blocks and safety equipment. The vessel was coated with Stoppani's bio-based clear coats, with 30% of the raw materials used coming from certified renewable sources, while North Sails supplied the sail set, custom-designed to ensure performance and versatility in racing.

"This boat represents just one part of a larger and more ambitious project: a journey that combines technical and sporting expertise, sustainable innovation, and scientific research," Rosetti concluded. "I can't wait to put Maccaferri Futura to the test in a race and share this adventure with everyone who made it possible."

In addition to the two designers, Edoardo Bianchi, CEO of Sangiorgio Marine, Alberto Monaco, shipyard manager, Alberto Riva, an offshore sailor who oversaw the onboard electronics, and Tommaso Stella, responsible for rigging and high-performance lines in collaboration with Gottifredi Maffioli, also worked on the project. As boat captain, Yaël Poupon, a two-time Laser class champion, supported Luca Rosetti in organizing the hull construction. Giulia Albuzio, as team principal, oversees the Maccaferri Futura project, while Paolo Bertazzoni, as resident manager, manages team logistics and operational coordination.
