The SMM (Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology) trade fair opens its doors in Hamburg on Tuesday, September 3, with many Italian companies and professionals participating as exhibitors and attendees.

The SMM, held every two years, is one of the leading international events for the shipping industry and a key event, especially for those working in the shipbuilding sector. This trade fair is the most anticipated showcase for innovation and the latest technologies in the maritime sector; it occupies the entire 13 halls of the Hamburg exhibition center, which covers a total area of 93.000 square meters.

The 2024 edition of SMM is expected to attract more than 2.000 exhibiting companies and approximately 40.000 visitors from over 120 countries, spanning the entire maritime industry value chain. With the theme "SMM – Driving the Maritime Transition," the 31st edition will focus on maritime energy transition and digital transformation. An attractive conference program and a wide range of networking opportunities will complement the show. For the first time, the conferences will be held on open stages within the exhibition halls, free of charge and accessible to all trade fair visitors.

The following sectors are represented at the fair: shipbuilding and shipyards, marine equipment, propulsion machinery and systems, auxiliary propulsion systems, ship systems, port loading and unloading systems, pumps and compressors, electronic and electrical engineering, marine technologies, ports and port technology, ship brokers and charterers, shipowners, the technical press, etc.

The 2022 edition (the 2020 edition was canceled due to the Covid-19 health emergency) attracted 2.000 exhibitors and 125.000 visitors. SMM is the leading international trade fair for the shipbuilding industry, showcasing a wide range of innovations.

Workshops and conferences round out the program. Among the topics at the center of discussion this year, in addition to current geopolitical challenges, will be the decarbonization of ships, artificial intelligence (AI), and the recruitment of young talent. With these topics, SMM outlines the key priorities for the future of the shipping industry.

Amid numerous international conflicts, the importance of military operational readiness has been highlighted by many nations, which are modernizing their fleets at this historic moment. At this edition of the SMM trade fair, navies and coast guards will be more present than ever to find the right cooperation partners and benefit from the innovations introduced by civil maritime transport.

In addition to the military world, the cruise sector will also be one of the businesses that will guarantee signs of great excitement and liveliness in Hamburg.
