Swan launches first hybrid-electric yacht
The project was born to offer a true high-performance superyacht based on an efficient platform, which reduces management costs and simplifies the charter certification process.

The first unit of the Swan 88 with hybrid electric propulsion has been launched at Swan’s Boatbuilding Technology Centre in Pietarsaari, Finland.
The Swan 88 is the first model the shipyard has fully developed from the ground up to offer a hybrid-electric propulsion option in collaboration with Torqeedo; the naval architecture collaboration continued with German Frers, the interior design was by Misa Poggi, and the exterior styling was by Lucio Micheletti of Micheletti + Partner.
The innovation of this new project is represented by the shape of the roof, inspired by the wind with its essential and dynamic lines highlighted, as well as the transom that invites you to the “Beach Club” bathing platform.
The Swan 88 features a series of solutions for space, functional quality, and onboard comfort, both inside and out. Natural light flooding in from the companionway atrium and the windows in the roof and hull adds a luminous ambience to the interior.
Designed to offer owners the opportunity to reduce operating costs through charter, this high-performance maxi design meets the critical 24-metre loadline length rule for compliance with the MCA light charter regulations.
The decision to develop this vessel stems from the shipyard's goal – explains Swan in its statement – to offer a truly high-performance superyacht based on an efficient platform, minimizing management costs and simplifying the charter certification process.
The cruising appendages include a T-keel with a moderate draft of 4 meters and twin rudders, which offer significant advantages such as reduced draft but also greater safety and excellent balance while sailing. The hull and deck are constructed entirely of epoxy carbon fiber, leveraging the proven advantages of Sprint@ lamination technology combined with the shipyard's advanced carbon molding technology.
"The Swan 88 marks an important milestone for the shipyard's production. It is the first hybrid-powered yacht, which has seen ongoing collaboration with Torqeedo and contributed to the study and development of the same features across the entire range, not just the maxi yachts," says Giovanni Pomati, CEO of the Nautor Group, who also announced the launch of the second unit in a few days.
The maxi yacht will make its world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival, from September 10 to 15, and at the Monaco Yacht Show, from September 25 to 28.
