The innovative BIIM vessel with diesel-electric propulsion has been launched.
The model created by Costruzioni Navali Tigullio based on a Names design has been designed to be retrofitted onto other diesel-powered shaft line vessels.
The 13-meter BIIM (Innovative Modular Hybrid Boat) has been launched in Lavagna. The vessel was designed as a multipurpose service vessel that can be adapted for various uses, from firefighting to waste collection, but also to tackle the open sea, for example, as a support vessel for underwater activities. These are just some of the features of the new vessel built by Costruzioni Navali Tigullio based on a Names design.
"The project was funded by a non-repayable grant co-financed by the European Development Fund of the Liguria Region 2014-2020," stated Francesco Rogantin of the Names studio, which oversaw the naval design. The BIIM vessel is equipped with two 99,4 kW Nanni turbodiesel engines for propulsion, with the addition of a hybrid module on each propeller shaft consisting of two 30 kW electric motors, powered by salt-cell batteries charged by a suitably marinized 45 kW fuel cell and a 6 kgH2 metal hydride storage system.
"One of the interesting aspects of BIIM," states the press release published by Names, "is that the hybrid module was designed to be retrofitted to other diesel-powered vessels. The choice of salt-based batteries was dictated by the desire to prioritize safety, as there is no risk of fire or overheating, thus eliminating the need for an oversized fire extinguishing system."
The BIIM vessel is 13 meters long, with a waterline length of 10,45 meters and a maximum beam of 4,21 meters. It displaces 14 tons and can accommodate a maximum of eight people. With diesel/hybrid propulsion, the maximum speed is 11 knots and the cruising speed is eight knots. In addition to Names and Costruzioni Navali Tigullio, the vessel's construction was supported by Duferco Engineering, a multinational company specializing in the development of green energy sources; Blue Energy Revolution, specializing in the construction of hydrogen power plants; Vulkan Italia; and I.Mar.S.
