Vard, Fincantieri's Norwegian subsidiary, has won a contract to build what it claims will be the "largest yacht in the world." Measuring 222 meters long, 27 meters wide, and weighing 33.500 gross tons, the vessel—renamed Somnio—will be a residential yacht, housing 39 apartments and sailing according to the owners' specifications.

The construction of Somnio, scheduled for delivery in spring 2024, will involve several Fincantieri entities: in addition to the parent company itself, Vard Design and Vard Electro will also be involved. Specifically, the hull will be built at the Romanian shipyard Vard Tulcea, while the outfitting will be handled by Vard Søviknes in Norway. The design was handled by the Swedish and British studios Tillberg Design and Winch Design.

The ship, explained Attilio Dapelo, general manager of Vard's Cruise Business Unit, will be "the largest ever built" by the shipbuilding group and will employ a large number of the company's specialized designers and builders. Daniele Fanara, general manager of Fincantieri's Cruise Business Unit, is also pleased, stating that "once again" the Italian shipbuilding group "is the first to develop innovative designs for new segments and market niches. Our teams collaborated closely with Somnio and their architects. The result is truly exceptional and will set the standard for a new niche in high-end vacations."

Fincantieri has not revealed the identity of the ship's owners, nor its construction cost, but several press sources estimate it to be around €500 million.
